Sport Edmonton, in partnership with Athletics Alberta, the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL), and the City of Edmonton’s Playground Program (Green Shacks), is proud to announce the launch of the Capital Power Summer Legends program, a new community-based initiative designed to help children discover the joy of movement, sport, and physical activity.
Capital Power Summer Legends is set to provide free introductory athletics-based programming at the 26 extended-hours (full-day) Green Shacks locations around the city from June 29 to August 21. Delivered through the City of Edmonton’s beloved Green Shack program, the initiative will introduce kids ages 6-12 to the fundamental skills of running, jumping, and throwing through fun, inclusive, and age-appropriate activities.
The drop-in program is part of Sport Edmonton and EFCL’s Play Where You Live strategy, which is focused on removing common barriers to participation, including cost, transportation, and registration requirements, ensuring more children have the opportunity to be active and engaged throughout the summer months.

The Summer Legend’s sport delivery partner, Athletics Alberta, provided specialized training for Green Shack leaders, including instruction on physical literacy principles, age-appropriate athletics activities, inclusive programming practices, and equipment use. The training helps ensure a consistent, high-quality experience for participants across the 26 locations at extended sites.

As part of Summer Legends, participating Green Shack sites will receive athletics equipment kits to support skill development in a safe and engaging manner. Following the summer season, these kits will remain in the community, creating a lasting legacy and supporting future sport and recreation programming.

The Summer Legends pilot program expands on this deep-rooted tradition across 26 select full-day Green Shack locations in Edmonton.”
Capital Power Summer Legends reflects a shared commitment among community, municipal, and sport partners to invest in the health, wellbeing, and future potential of Edmonton’s youth. Along with Capital Power’s investment, the program was supported financially by the City of Edmonton’s Live Active grant.

PARTNERS BEHIND CAPITAL POWER SUMMER LEGENDS
Sport Edmonton is the civic agency responsible for sport and recreation advocacy and connection, working with member sport partners like Athletics Alberta to help build a network of community-minded sport and recreation leaders.
The City of Edmonton has 19 Recreation Centres across the city, as well as seasonal outdoor pools and the summer Playground Pro. The 2026 Playground Program will offer 238 City-wide sites in total, including 26 extended hour full-day sites. All City facilities are community and social hubs for Edmontonians, serving community recreation and physical activity needs.
